The UK Maths Team Competition

This is a national competition organised by the UK Mathematical Trust, the organisation that oversees the UK Junior Maths Challenge (years 7 and 8) and the UK Intermediate Challenge (years 9, 10 and 11). The UK Team Competition consists of a around 1,000 schools battling it out at one of the 22 regional finals. These take place annually at local venues during March or April. Each regional winner then moves on to the National Finals in London. Each school is invited to send a team of four (consisting of at most 2 pupils from year 9 and at least 2 pupils from years 8 or below) to one of the regional finals.

The 2007 Competition

The regional finals took place at Danum School in Doncaster on Tuesday 15th May 2007. Sebastian Scotham and Adam Schofield from year 8 and Josh Harper and Nick Ivill from year 9 represented the school. Kirk Balk School finished a creditable 8th out of the participating schools.

The 2006 Competition

The regional finals took place at Doncaster on Thursday 27th April 2006. The team from Kirk Balk consisted of James Taylor and David Barrows from year 9 and Josh Harper and Dale Sunderland from year 8. They finished 9th out of 26 teams. As in previous years the competition consisted of four rounds. The first round was a team round where each team had to try and answer 10 maths questions in the allocated time. The second round saw the teams trying to complete a 'cross number' (like a cross word but with numbers instead of words). Not as easy as it seems given that half of the team had the down clues and half had the across clues! After lunch each team competed against other teams in a series of head to head activities. The final round took the form of a relay race with each team having to answer as many of the 15 questions as possible in sequence.

The 2005 Competition

This took place in Doncaster on Thursday 28th April. There were 35 teams from schools as far afield as Grimsby, Worksop, Ripon and Sheffield in this regional final. Lee Sunderland and Elliot Satur from year 9 and James Taylor and Gemma Cooke from year 8 represented Kirk Balk School. The competition consisted of four rounds and lasted all day. It started with a team round; each team had to try and answer 10 maths questions in the allocated time. The second round saw the teams trying to complete a 'cross number' (like a cross word but with numbers instead of words). The difficulty lay in the fact that half of the team had the down clues and half had the across clues! After lunch each team competed against 6 other teams in a series of head to head activities. The final round took the form of a relay race with each team having to answer as many of the 15 questions as possible in sequence. The team from Kirk Balk School did particularly well in the last round but didn't quite finish in the first three overall. (Only the first three were announced at the end of the competition).

The 2004 Competition

The regional finals took place at Danum School in Doncaster on Thursday 25th March. Charlotte Green, Elizabeth Taylor, Kerry Swales and Elliott Satur represented the school. Kirk Balk School finished a creditable 8th out of 22 participating schools.

The 2003 Competition

The regional finals took place at the Mount School in York on Thursday 26th March. Charlotte Green, Elizabeth Taylor, James Sylvester and Chris Spendlove represented the school. Kirk Balk School finished an excellent 3rd out of 24 participating schools.
