UK Intermediate Maths Challenge

This national competition, organised by the UK Mathematical Trust, is open to the most able pupils in years 9, 10 and 11. At Kirk Balk we usually enter the best 60 pupils in each of the three year groups. The Challenge takes place annually on the first Thursday in February in the school hall. See also the UK Junior Maths Challenge.

Nationally around 185,000 of the top young mathematicians take part in the Challenge. Certificates are awarded on a proportional basis: Gold about 6%, Silver about 14% and Bronze about 20% of all entrants. One pupil from each school also awarded 'Best in School Certificate'. The top 1,000 pupils in each year group from across the UK quailfy for the European 'Kangaroo' round where they compete against the brightest young mathematicians across Europe.
