The Crich Museum Trip
The Crich Tramways Museum in Derbyshire was a hive of mathematical activity for two days when traditional classroom based lessons were abandoned and replaced by a series of practical Maths activities at the museum.
200 pupils from years 8 and 9 participated in one of the two Maths Activity Days which took place on Monday 11th July and Monday 18th July 2005
The theme of the each of the days was practical Maths with pupils given the opportunity to solve problems in a real life situation. One of the most popular questions was to find the average speed of each of the trams. Of course to measure the time it took each tram to cover the 1.5 mile track involved another tram journey!
As well as enhancing their mathematical knowledge, pupils also found out about life of yesteryear and saw how old trams are being restored. They even found out that a pound used to mean 240 pennies not 100 pence!
