Information about the department
Currently the Department consists of 6 full time teachers, 3 Business specialists and 3 ICT specialists and we also have staff from other departments that help aid the success of our department. We are a department that is rapidly developing and growing each year. Staff are experienced, innovative and highly committed to developing the full ICT capability and skills of all pupils.
Kirk Balk enjoys all the benefits of a Technology College status school and i n terms of technology available, Kirk Balk is an exciting and forward-thinking school and our facilities are second to none in the Authority. There are 9 dedicated ICT rooms, with plans for further expansion and every classroom has an interactive whiteboard. Each of the Vocational Department staff has a webcam in their classroom and as a school we are looking to develop video conferencing facilities. Alongside these facilities the department has digital camcorders, cameras, laptops available.
At Key Stage 3 we offer the Edexcel Applied GCSE in ICT, this is studied from year 7 through to 9 and is providing the pupils with a wider range of options for year 10 and beyond. Additionally pupils are also encouraged to complete the ECDL qualification and will also complete the Year 9 online test. In Key Stage 4 we offer a range of subjects within the Vocational Subjects Department, these include the DiDA qualification (including AiDA and CiDA), Business Studies, Business Communication Systems, Health and Social Care, Leisure and Tourism. As from September 2006 we are also introducing Post 16 Business Studies in collaboration with local colleges.
As a department we are continuing to develop links with primary schools so that we can closely monitor the progress of pupils and be more informed as to the skills they come to Kirk Balk with so that groups can be formed to give support to the progress of Year 7.
